Marathon Training - The Good, The Bad, The Humidity...

It's Hot Hot Hot!!!

The last few weeks have had record high temps in VA. The first 3 weeks of training temperatures reached 100*+ . Needless to say, it hasn't had a great impact on my training...

My best run to date was a smooth, 7 miles on a Monday evening. I kept an 8:20 pace and felt generally good.

Not even a week later I barely survived an 8 mile run. At mile 4 I contemplated having my husband pick me up. I took off my shirt and ran in just my sports bra (which I never do). The last 2 miles were not pretty; I actually walked up a few hills. Ugh how will I ever run 26 miles???

Today the temps have pleasantly dropped since then, and my longest run to date has been a 10-miler. I felt great, only stopped a few times because of a nagging pain in my left foot. I just got new asics, so I'm hoping this is just 'breaking new shoes in' pain, but I'm fearing the worst. I'm the most flat-footed runner there is. I am always paranoid of injuries when a big race is on the line...

10 Weeks

That's right... 10 weeks until the big day - Richmond!!! I wish I could say I'm 100% stoked, but I'm getting super nervous. I forgot how much pain the marathon brings..and the miserable training involved. I'm still in the beginning phases. Thinking about all of the upcoming 16, 18, and 20 mile runs makes my skin crawl. I love running, and I hate running. It's beyond complicated.

On the schedule

September 10th

I signed up for a half marathon next weekend to ease my nerves - The Hemlock half!  I'm excited for multiple reasons. The half marathon is my favorite race distance. Long enough to hurt, not long enough to hit the wall, and an easy recovery. Plus this is a trail run, which means I won't be going all-out. Streams, rocks, narrow paths, and rolling hills (mountains) means I will ease up on my speed and just enjoy the beautiful course. My good friend Natassha is doing the 10K there as well, so we have a winery afternoon planned afterwards :) A blog post will follow.

Ragnar

I'm so excited for this I could shout from the hills!!! For those of you who don't know, Ragnar  is a 2 day relay where a team of 12 conquers 200+ miles together. 2 vans with 6 people each follow the trail. Someone is always running (day, night, sleet, misery). I'm runner 6 for van 1, but I have agreed to switch for my first leg and do run 3 for my husband. Run 3 is the most difficult run of the entire course! Almost 8 miles straight up a mountain. My total mileage for 36 hours will be about 20 miles ( with 3 runs with the mileage of 7.8, 3.5, 8.8).  You barely sleep or eat, but I can tell you there is magic in the misery. When you cross that finish line with your 11 other teammates, it's pure euphoria. Last year I did this event during a hurricane. It poured rain the entire time. I've never had a better running experience. A blog will most definitely follow this event!!

Other News

Nothing big...just finished my masters degree ;-) Thank the Lord I am done with school!!!! But now I'm on to more adultish education (certifications, APMP, etc.) So I will still be keeping busy! But for now I have more time to dedicate to training, which I am whole-heatedly welcoming.

Wish me luck on the training.... I need it some days!
Cheers and happy running :)
